time & choice } From the past. 2008, to be exact. He'll be volunteered. He was on a job with the others and they ran into something that thought it would be funny to send him forward to 2010.
history } Little of Ed's childhood is known. According to his adopted sister, he grew interested in the supernatural when they were still very little. During computer camp one year, he met Harry Spengler and they became fast friends. They soon got a partnership together to hunt ghosts.
During their early ghost hunting days, they saw a ghost. Well, they didn't actually see it. They heard a lamp fall off of a table once. It changed things for them.
At some point, Ed and Harry got a trailer together and started the website Hellhoundlair.com. It was a ghost hunting website which collected stories about the paranormal. There's no telling how many stories were posted before the Winchesters ran across it. They became noticed when they posted a story about the Hell House and the man that lived inside, Mordechai Murdock. While investigating the house, they met Sam and Dean. Ed believed them to be amateurs on the run for cheep thrills. They left the house and came back after a girl was killed inside. The police were outside, however. At first, they were forced to run away from the house. They returned only moments later to see Sam and Dean running from it. In that moment, they caught a ghostly figure standing in the doorway of the house, which they caught on camera. They were arrested by the cops and spent the night in a holding cell. Sam and Dean escaped.
In the morning, when they were released, they posted the video they caught onto their website. Their views quadrupled. During the day, Sam and Dean came by their trailer. They asked Ed and Harry to take down their website. When Sam and Dean told them they would give them news on Mordechai if they took down their website. They agreed, but only to get the information. They were given a death certificate and told that Mordechai was afraid of firearms. When they got the information, Ed immediately posted it to the website instead of taking it down. Right after that, their server went down.
That night, they returned to the house. Sam and Dean were also there. Sam and Dean shot at Mordechai, but the firearms didn't work. Mordechai ended up attacking them when they tried to escape from the house, which was Harry's idea. During the attack, Ed tried to ward off Mordechai by yelling, "The power of Christ compels you." It didn't work. Sam distracted the man and they took off into the night away from the house. It was later burnt down by Sam and Dean.
The next day, they received a call from a big wig producer that wanted to make their experience at the Hell House into a movie and a RPG. They took off to L.A. with high hopes and all their stuff packed up. What they didn't know what Sam who called, and Dean who put the dead fish in the back of their car.
After their complete failure of the Hell House material giving them anything, they didn't give up. They moved, Ed moving into his parent's house. He and Harry got jobs at a Kinko's during the day, and at night they worked on their gig. They gathered up a team of folks and started the Ghost Facers, trying to start their big TV hit. Their team consisted of Alan Corbett, Kenny Spruce and Maggie Zeddmore (Ed's adopted little sister). It's not clear how many missions they had before their next appearance in Supernatural, but they had clear roles in their team.
Their new case consisted of the Morton house, which had a leap year ghost. According to their research, no one ever stayed the night on February 29th before, because others cut and run before then. They planned to stay the entire night and catch some ghosts. They set up a base called the Eagle's Nest and split off into the house. Ed paired with Corbett. They search several places in the house before running into Sam and Dean, who came into the house to investigate the house. They pretended to be cops, but Ed remembered who they were. Sam and Dean told Ed to get his buddies and get out of the house.
They went back to the Eagle's Nest. Sam and Dean told them that there was a bunch missing persons cases associated with the house. Maggie, Spruce and Harry came running back to camp and showed them a ghost they had recorded. It ended up being a death echo. After the initial excitement, Sam and Dean tried to move them out of the house. Then Ed realized Corbett was missing. Seconds later, they heard Corbett screaming in the house. They ran off, trying to find him, using the walkie-talkies to attempt communication. During their search, midnight passed. All of the exits were sealed in a supernatural lock-down. They went back to the Eagle's Nest to regroup.
At the Eagle's Nest, they ran into another death echo. Dean failed to wake the death echo, but failed because he had no connection with the dead. They saw the death echo get hit by a train that was never there. They started looking for Corbett in a group, or some hints as to what was going on. Ed wanted to dig up the entire house looking for him. They found toe tags during their search, showing that the man stole dead bodies and put them in the house. They got a surge of power, and in that surge, Sam disappeared. Dean freaked, yelling as they searched the house. The team continued to look for Corbett at the same time, yelling around and things.
In that search, Ed found Harry and Maggie making out. This was the first time he learned of their relationship. He wasn't happy. Ed tried to kick Harry's ass until Dean broke them up. After that, Ed took off to find Corbett again. Ed and the crew started following Dean again. They found out that the guy was afraid of a nuclear attack. They followed him to the basement, but the door closed before they all could get through. Spruce and Dean went into the basement, while Ed, Harry and Maggie stayed at the Eagle's Nest. There, they made a circle with salt and stood inside it. While inside the circle, they saw Corbett as a death echo. The death echo disappeared. Ed felt extremely guilty about the death.
Corbett's echo reappeared later. Ed remembered that death echoes could be pulled out of their loops by important people. This is the first time he learned that Corbett had a crush on him. Ed used that and approached Corbett's death echo, attempting to pull him out of the loop. He said that Corbett meant a lot to the team and to him. He told Corbett that he loved him. It pulled Corbett out of the loop. Corbett sacrificed himself to defeat the ghost and save them all from the house.
When they emerged from the house, Sam and Dean gave them a number to contact them. Later, the compiled all of the footage into a 30-45 minute special which they intended to give to show producers. They showed the footage to Sam and Dean, who approved of it. And then the footage was wiped why Sam and Dean, who left a EMP bomb to erase everything on their computers and hard drives.
After this, they continued to hunt ghosts. Made their own little series and website.
personality }
Ed comes across as a cocky know-it-all paranormal investigator with no patience for "amateurs" in the field. He takes this ghost investigating stuff very seriously. He's determined to keep working, despite whatever life-endangering things happen. Several people died on missions of his, including one teammate, and he still continued his work. He said it was to give people the truth, but really he wanted a TV, movie and book deal out of his adventures. He wants it badly. And he'll do anything to get what he wants, including blatantly lie to others and border between using his friend's death and giving him a proper send off.
With that cocky exterior and determination comes pretty good leadership skills. Although some would question taking people to a dangerous field, he's pretty good at keeping them calm and together. When Harry or others freaked out, he was usually the one telling them to breathe and quiet down. Sometimes he would use pop culture to prove his point, such as WWBD - What Would Buffy Do. Harry and Maggie told him at one point that his bravery keeps the rest of the team brave.
That doesn't mean he can keep a cool head. In extreme cases of fear, where in his friends are in extreme danger or had something bad happen to them, Ed will lose his ability to lead. If he's under extreme emotional stress, little things will tick him off. Maggie and Harry making out for instance. He'll forgive later, but in the moment, he'll act irrationally. Then, if he's scared, he'll believe that he's not capable of things that he truly is. In those moments, people can talk him into doing those great things, but he won't unless they're there to talk him into it. Talking Corbett out of the death echo loop, for instance. Harry had to talk him into it.
Ed is seen crying once on camera, and that was when he talked Corbett out of the death echo. He was clearly bothered by Corbett's death, and as he spoke to the death echo, he was attempting to save a friend from an eternity of facing his death over and over. He brought Corbett into the house, so there was a little guilt there. It was all over his face when Maggie first brought Corbett's loop up into discussion.
Outside of the paranormal investigations, Ed's just a pretty typical nerd. He collects action figures, leaving them in their original boxes, and collecting things from the fandoms that he likes, including the original Star Trek. There's an entire list of his likes here. He's still pretty cocky, wanting things to be his way. He wants to be a leader all the time, and will make remarks in order to do so.
abilities }
Ed isn't any sort of supernatural creature, he just hunts for evidence of the paranormal. That being said, he has no special abilities. He does have to have certain qualities for being the leader of his team though. He's able to calm people that are freaking out around him. He has an odd determination. Because of his work, he knows the usual lore about ghosts. Catching them on camera, that sort of thing. It isn't the hunting/killing level that Sam and Dean are familiar with. He probably couldn't fight to well, even if he wanted to. No experience. The one fight he did have on camera, with Harry, it was a sissy kind of fight.
appearance }
At 5'9", Ed's far from the tallest man in the show, but he is the second tallest on his team, only shorter than Spruce by a few inches. He has brown hair, a little on the light side, with just enough trimming on his beard to give him some side burns and a little beard. It's not a goatee or anything.
He's thin, but not overly built. He can run good enough, but he isn't built for fighting or extreme physical taxing.

Ed blinked, the person once before him gone. The warmth of Harry close to his side was lost, replaced with an odd chill. He stared at the night vision screen on the camera in his hand. It was empty, save for the wall in front of him. Where did it go? Ed turned his head to ask, only to see his friend was gone. He jerked the camera that direction. A wall. Harry was gone. Back, the ghost was gone.
"Harry?" His voice is quiet at first as he turned a jerky 360 in that spot. He was alone. Once he turned completely, he reached for his walkie and pulled it up to his mouth, pressing the button. "Harry? Come in." He released the button, watching the screen as he continued to turn. He wasn't catching anything unusual. There wasn't even a flicker of a camera to indicate anything paranormal had happened. How could they just be gone?
When there was no answer, he tried again. "Harry?" He paused in silence. No one responded. "Maggie? Spruce? Come in." He's starting to lose his cool, his voice growing louder and shakier. He waited. There was still no response. Were they ignoring him? No, something happened.
He found the door and jogged out. "Hey, you guys! Answer m... e." Immediately, he was faced with unfamiliarity. This wasn't the same hallway he just walked down. There was no window just outside the door. The walls were decorated with crooked paintings. This wasn't the right house. Where was he? Where were the others? Were the separated? How did this even happen?
"Guys!" He started down the hall, ignoring the camera that stayed in his hand. He jerked around the corner and entered a large living room. It was empty, speckled with dust. Their equipment wasn't here. "Harry! Maggie! Spruce! Where are you guys?!" That flustered about, jerking around, trying to eye them in the darkness around him. Then he stopped. No, this wasn't helping. He took a deep breath, calming himself. WWBD. What would Buffy do. Right. Right.
"Harry?" His voice grew softer now. He worked his way through the room, finding the door. He opened it. Outside. He was outside. Great. He could deal with that. Except their cars were gone. There was no sign that the Ghostfacers crew was ever there. He pulled the walkie back to his mouth. "Guys. If you're out there, answer me. Something seriously weird is going on." Silence. There was no answer. He was alone.
